VAGABOND007 PART1- IS A NEW SERIES OF WORKS BY SERBAN IONESCU, WITH THE BEGINNING  FOCUS AND CONCENTRATION ON THE CHARACTER ‘VAGABOND007’.

 

ON EXHIBIT AT SENASPACE GALLERY FROM FEBRUARY 01,13 THROUGH MARCH 01,13.

 

INFLUENCED BY THE  EVER GROWING FRANCHISE ‘JAMES BOND’ IDOL CHARACTER, HIS EXPLOITS, POSTER ART AND QUICK LIKE CATCH PHRASES, WHICH APPEAR IN THE PAINTINGS.

VAGABOND007, IS NOT A GENTLEMAN IN A SUIT, HE DOES NOT DRIVE FANCY BMWS. NONETHELESS HE IS A CARTOON LIKE STREET CHARACTER WITH A SIMILAR ADVENTURE UNDER HIS NOSE. HE IS FROM A DIFFERENT CLASS STRUCTURE, A LESS DESIRED ONE. THE WORK IS INQUIRING HOW CAN A ‘VAGABOND’ CHARACTER, BECOME A POSIBLE HOLLYWOOD EXPLOIT AND OR ACCEPTED AS A HERO IN SOME MASS MEDIA DRIVEN HOUSEHOLDS. WHO ARE OUR INFLUENCES AND IDOLS WE LOVE TO SEE FIGHT CRIME, ROOT FOR OR BECOME OUR FICTIONAL ADVENTURERS? THE SHOW IS THE FIRST PHASE OF A SERIES OF WORK AND EXPLORATION OF THIS CHARACTER’S CONTRASTS AND MIS-ADVENTURES.

BIO

Born in Communist Romania, Serban and his family moved to Queens, NY, in 1993 when he was 10. An only child who did not speak until the age of 6, Serban remembers hearing tales about Dracula’s castle, Werewolves, Vampires, and

Vlad the Impaler, and recalls there were many more demons than heroes, which are an apparent influence on the narratives of his works. And how Cinema and Film made these myths and characters into ‘real’ images to connect with, laugh with and cry with. Parallel to this, the history of NYC and his growing up in it, exposure to Graffiti, abrupt neighborhood changes, vast class diversity are beginning influence his new work. Working in mediums of painting, drawing, sculpture, large installation and film.

He has exhibited at Bridge Gallery in the L.E.S., for solo shows ‘Demeter, 2012’, ‘Secret History, 2011’ and collective show ‘The Objectionists: Object City 2010’, he has curated ‘To The Stars On The Wings Of An Eel’ at the Gowanus Ballroom in 2012, and has shown in many group shows all around NYC, co-owned ‘Gestarc Gallery in Red Hook, Brooklyn from 2005-2008’ and founded ‘The Objectionists’ a communal design collective. His work has been published in New York Times, Dwell Magazine, Time Out New York, Troy Record, Working Class Magazine and many others. He taught Architectural Design at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute from 2010-2012. Received a B.Arch from Pratt Institute in 2007. He lives and works in Brooklyn.
