FURNITURE BY OFF
(Serban Ionescu & J McDonald)

01.28.16 - 02.29.16

OFF brings Art and Design together to create a new world of furniture as playful and sculptural as it is rigorous and minimal. The new collaboration between Serban Ionescu and J McDonald brings their backgrounds in and a love for Architecture and Design together with perspectives formed through years of individual artistic exploration in painting, sculpture and installation. O.F.F. is their NYC debut collection of functional sculpture.

CARTESIAN FIRE

CARTESIAN FIRE
BY
DAVID BUTTON

David Button moved to Berlin from New York in March of 2010. He works with an amalgamation of materials, employing building techniques from his background as a fabricator of art and architecture. Physically, his works may be considered to be playing with a controlled chaos, but conceptually the work taps into fundamental questions of how we construct our realities. Although Button is working in a multitude of mediums, similarities can certainly be seen in the ways he treats the materials of each project. There is always a combination of elements, at times in a very basic chemical sense, and diametrically opposite materials at others. In the Oxidation Reduction works, Button is working with iron-based thermite in combination with a variety of materials. The works demonstrate a destructive property in the forces of nature, but also organic qualities found in inorganic architectural artifacts. Although Button is orchestrating the project, he admits that at a certain point he ceases to be in control and chance plays a dominant roll. Whether he is establishing a reference plane with commonly recognized geometry, or simply allowing a line to take its own course, the works have very distinct qualities of unpredictability and power.

PYRISCENCE

SenaSpace Gallery is pleased to present Pyriscence, an exhibition featuring a selection of dynamic sculptures and large-scale drawings on paper by gallery founder, David Sena. Conceived as a retrospective, Pyriscence revisits techniques developed and refined by Sena over the past twenty years.  Together they comprise a rich vocabulary of fire-based marks.   The exhibition is a series of silhouette self-portraits, each created through shadow projection, one of the many ways Sena attempts to avert authorship and to examine himself with the detachment of a scientist -- as a pure consequence of shadow and light.  Making himself the subject, as mysterious and multi-layered as the night-sky, Sena personalizes his exploration of universal questions of existence.  His search is an intricate and technical choreography of burning and extinguishing, control and release.  The resultant surface resembles a shooting target but reverses its violence.  The voids are revelatory: they allow glimpses of infinity; they are outlets for the mind’s energy; the distances between layers create volume and mimic the dance of gravitational motion.  The self becomes a mirror, the cosmos reflected in an interior expanse.     The exhibition title refers to an adaptation of certain seeds to fire-prone ecosystems.  These seeds regenerate only after exposure to extreme heat.  Sena’s self-portraits reflect on his own emergence as an artist in New York City, his own becoming by fire.

LA VIE EN TUGBOAT

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

KATHRYN LYNCH

La vie en tugboat

Curated by jia jia

Nov 7 – 30, 2013

OPENING THURS NOV 7, 6 – 9

NEW YORK, NY  – SENASPACE Gallery is pleased to announce La vie en tugboat, an exhibition of Kathryn Lynch’s river tugs. This will be Lynch’s 13th solo show and first NYC exhibition of the tugs.

Lynch’s recent views of boats, tugs, and the river are images of things we all know and recognize. Expressed with a palette that is masterfully warm and tonal, they are the color of season – gray and green- and times of day- orange and blue. They are also the symbols of the ongoing solitary traveller in each of us. Lynch’s paintings describe the storms we confront, the wind and rain that push against us and the sun that finally shines. Each episode is represented by her imaginative play of toy like boats upon the water.

Lynch is known for her highly reductive style. Simple shapes, rather than specific characteristics define the imagery she depicts. According to Lynch, her depictions of the surrounding world “fall through the cracks” of abstraction and representation, where painting is “a combination of remembering and forgetting.” Lynch collects visual data from her daily surroundings, transforming the picture plane into authentic and simplified forms of her own.

Lynch has received grants from the Marie Walsh Sharpe Foundation, Yaddo, and a Spain Residency, Joya: arte & eclologia: losqazquez. Kathryn’s work is included in many private and corporate collections and is represented by Sears Peyton Gallery in New York City.

ANTI NUKE SHIT

Artist Info

 Name: Zoé Thorne

Lifework: Painting, tattooing, drinking coffee and mixing cocktails.

Thema: My painting mean different things. The "Bier-Potraits meiner grossen Liebe" Series is a ever growing painting-series with different current influences.

The Painting for the schow: "Deutsche Landschaft" projects the Anti-Nuke Theme onto the German Landscape.  By using a exsisting painting and adding a nuclear power-plant, I expressed the destruction of the Landscape through radiation and the triumpf of consumerism over nature.

The cat has tattoo on his back the face of "EBIS" who is the one of the JAPANESE's good luck 7gods.

恵比寿のお面の周りに配された先の尖った珠は日本語でhosyu(宝珠)と呼ばれ、あらゆる願いを叶える不思議な珠である。

Around the EBIS mask has strange shape ball that called " HOUJYU" means treasure ball. It has a miracle power and support to our any dreams.

(向かって)右上方の三つ葉文様は恵比寿を象徴する紋を逆さにしたもの。ここでは放射線マークに見立てている。

on the top, rlight side has a symbol of EBIS, but it up side down what seems like "Radioactivity symbol ".
